Climate and Weather in Aveyron

Due to its geographical location and relief, the department constitutes a crossroads of climatic influences. Thus, the climate of Aveyron is of three types:

  • Mediterranean in the south with a marked continental influence characterized by cold winters and hot summers.
  • Degraded Aquitaine oceanic climate in the west characterized by a mild atmosphere.
  • Mountainous in the north with harsh winters and mild summers.

Summer in Aveyron

In most of the region, summers are mild, with temperatures ranging between 15 and 27°C (81°F) in Rodez. Further south, towards Saint-Affrique, the Mediterranean climate is more pronounced, with high temperatures and occasional droughts. It is in the northern part of the department where temperatures are cooler, with highs around 20°C (68°F) in Laguiole.

During this season, precipitation is rare, despite some thunderstorms that may occur in the evening, especially in mountainous areas.

Autumn in Aveyron

During autumn, the weather in Aveyron remains pleasant until late October, but deteriorates quickly once November arrives. Over most of the department, the oceanic influence from the Atlantic brings precipitation and strong winds.

In Rodez and Bozouls, temperatures drop to around 5°C (41°F) at night in November, rarely rising above 10°C (50°F) during the day. As for the gorges of Aveyron, they have a few degrees higher during this season.

Winter in Aveyron

It is during this season that the proximity to the Massif Central is most felt, with a continental climate over most of Aveyron and a mountainous climate in the highlands.

Temperatures are cold, with thermometers ranging between 0 and 5°C (41°F) in January and February in Rodez or around Lake Pareloup. On the Aubrac plateau and in the Causses, winters are even harsher, with temperatures rarely rising above 0°C (32°F) . On average, about sixty days of morning frost are recorded during this season.

On the bright side, snow is present all winter, much to the delight of winter sports enthusiasts!

Spring in Aveyron

In spring, the climate in Aveyron varies greatly depending on the location:

  • On plateaus and at higher altitudes, it is not uncommon for snow to persist until late April. Additionally, temperatures remain cool and precipitation is significant, especially around Laguiole.
  • In the south or in the gorges of Aveyron, days are sunnier and temperatures can easily rise above 20°C (68°F) as early as the beginning of May.
