Climate and Weather in Tibet

Tibet is an autonomous region of China, located in the northern Himalayas close to Nepal, Bangladesh and India. The climate of Tibet is continental, cold and dry. There are often marked differences between diurnal and nocturnal temperatures. Contrary to many popular beliefs, there is very little snow in Tibet except for the Himalayan borders; more so, the Himalayas do not stop the monsoons- they are certainly mitigated by the mountains, but in July and August, one half of the annual rain falls in the region.

The Tibetan summer can be very pleasant. Between June and August, the weather in Tibet is generally cool and dry. In Lhasa for example, temperatures are quite warm and during the summer rainy season, it usually rains only at night - leaving time to explore this area and its wonders by day.

In autumn, the climate of Tibet brings temperatures down, sometimes causing negative values - but precipitation remains low. The winter is extremely cold and dry. The lowest temperatures are also in the negatives, especially at night. If there is little snow on the plateaus, it is not however uncommon to see the ground covered with ice. The Himalayan passes are snowy and it is therefore difficult to travel between Nyalam and Kharta, as in all of the mountainous region.

In the spring, the temperatures rise, the ice melts and the weather remains dry with low precipitation. In May, fresh but pleasant temperatures announce the imminent arrival of summer.
